Q&A with Australian Home Designer Kelly Muller

Inspired by our partnership with fellow Aussie Shannon Vos, design influencer Kelly Muller knew that Trex decking was the only material that would deliver the aesthetics, durability and ease she wanted for her #MullerFamilyHome in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. We caught up with Kelly following her deck build to learn more about her project and why she chose to build with Trex.

Why did you choose Trex for your project?

While pulling together a mood board for our house build, I came across Shannon Vos’ renovation The Pool Haus and saw that he had used Trex decking. My husband and I loved the look of it but, even more, we loved that it is a low-maintenance, eco-friendly material. Knowing that Trex didn’t require sanding, staining or painting was a massive plus for our young family.

Which Trex decking collection did you use?

We chose Trex Transcend® decking in Island Mist. We liked the deep wood-grain pattern, and the grey tone complements the concrete elements we’ve used both in and outside of our home.

Did you use any of the Trex online resources or tools during your design or building process?

We ordered samples online which helped us to visualize the end result. Seeing and feeling the sample colors in real life is definitely beneficial.

How do you and your family enjoy your Trex deck?

Our backyard gets all-day northern sun so we spend a lot of time back there. Our kids love to use the deck as a jumping pad into the pool. For my husband Josh and me, it is the perfect spot to end the day and watch the kids swim, while soaking up the last of the sun.

What do you love most about your Trex deck?

We’re really happy with the aesthetic. The grey tone has barely changed in the past six months since we’ve had the deck, and it ties into our overall look and feel seamlessly. We also love that it is made from 95% recycled materials and you can’t beat the minimal maintenance. We are a busy, active family and not having to spend time sanding or oiling – nor will we need to in the future – makes this product an absolute winner!
